Roy Morgan Helix Personas
Do you really know your customer?
We all understand not every visitor is looking for the same experience. One of the biggest opportunities for tourism businesses is understanding who your ideal customer is, and tailoring your marketing to what matters most to them.
Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing insights into the Goulburn Region’s major day trip and overnight visitor personas, helping you better understand who visits our region, what motivates them and how to connect with them more effectively.
This month we’re looking at one of the Goulburn Region’s key day trip visitor personas – Roy Morgan’s “603s” also known as Quiet homelifers.
The 603s are practical, value-conscious and looking for an enjoyable, hassle-free day out. They respond to clear information, easy-to-plan experiences, genuine hospitality and offers that deliver obvious value. Think scenic drives, country pubs, fishing, local produce, markets and places where they can relax and feel welcome.
What are they less interested in? Hype, complicated booking processes, hidden costs or marketing that makes it hard to work out exactly what they’re getting.
Of course, this is just one visitor profile. It won’t suit every business – and that’s exactly the point. A boutique luxury accommodation provider, for example, may be targeting a very different audience with different expectations and motivations.
That’s also one of the Goulburn Region’s greatest strengths. We attract a diverse mix of visitors, each looking for something different. It’s why thinking beyond individual businesses and working together to build a compelling destination is so important. When we collectively offer experiences that appeal to different visitor types, everyone benefits.
If you’d like to take it a step further, we’re happy to work one-on-one with our members to identify your ideal customer and explore practical ways to better engage them through your marketing, website and visitor experience. Because the more clearly you speak to the right audience, the more likely they are to choose you.
Want to dig a bit deeper?
603 – Quiet lifestyler – the inside running!
At first glance, they’re easy to stereotype. They enjoy fishing, gardening, DIY, pubs, RSLs, home cooking, day trips and the occasional flutter on the pokies or scratchies. Their average household income sits around $76k, they’re typically around 41 years old, and they make up almost a million Australians. But look a little deeper and a much clearer picture emerges.
This isn’t someone looking to be impressed with luxury or complicated itineraries. They’re practical. They value their time, appreciate good value and want to know exactly what they’re getting before they leave home.
More importantly, they don’t want to be sold to—they want to feel confident they’ve made a smart choice.
That has some interesting implications for tourism operators.
What will get their attention?
This audience responds to experiences that feel achievable, useful and worthwhile.
Think:
- Easy day itineraries they can complete in a day.
- Plenty of free or low-cost things to see alongside paid experiences.
- Family-friendly options where everyone gets value.
- Clear pricing and what’s included.
- Local produce they can take home.
- Demonstrations, tastings or opportunities to “try before you buy.”
- Practical workshops or behind-the-scenes experiences where they learn something new.
- Friendly locals who happily share advice without making visitors feel out of place.
The Goulburn Region is actually well positioned for this audience. Our proximity to Melbourne, abundance of country pubs, fishing spots, farm gates, wineries, markets and scenic drives all tick important boxes around accessibility, capability and value.
These align closely with the region’s promise of being an abundant, welcoming destination that’s easy to reach and generous in its experiences.
What could turn them off?
Just as importantly, there are things likely to lose them before they even arrive.
Avoid:
- Overly polished marketing full of hype.
- Vague claims like “an unforgettable experience.”
- Complicated booking processes.
- Hidden costs or surprise add-ons.
- Experiences that seem expensive without clearly explaining the value.
- Pressure-selling or “limited time” tactics.
- Itineraries that require lots of planning or specialist knowledge.
If visitors have to work hard to understand what they’re getting, many simply won’t bother.
The lesson for operators
When writing your website, social media or ATDW listing, ask yourself:
Would someone immediately know:
- What they’ll do?
- How much it costs?
- Why it’s worth the drive?
- Whether it suits them?
- How easy it is to experience?
Clear, specific information consistently outperforms generic marketing language – not just with people, but with AI search tools as well. The more precisely you describe your experience, location and what visitors can actually do, the more likely you are to appear in AI-powered travel recommendations.
At the end of the day, this audience isn’t looking for luxury. They’re looking for a great day out, good value, genuine hospitality and the confidence that they’ve made the right choice.
Get that right, and they’ll happily pack the car and head your way.
